VirtualC64 v0.9.3 for Intel Macintosh OSx

January 16th, 2011 No comments

VirtualC64 emulates a Commodore 64 personal computer on your Intel Macintosh OSx > 10.6.

I wrote the software with two major goals in mind. First, I wanted to create an emulator that can be used as a demonstrator program in a first year or second year course on computer engineering.

To achieve this goal, I have integrated various debugging capabilities that let you peek inside the CPU, RAM, ROM, or one of the custom chips. Second, I tried to make the emulator as user friendly as it can get.

In short: VirtualC64 tries to combine the ongoing fascination of the ancient Commodore computers with the great user experience of today’s Macs.

Bug fixes and enhancements:

  • Introducing cheatbox. Travel back in time by reverting to automatically taken snapshot states
  • T64, PRG, and P00 files can now be mounted as virtual disk
  • Restructured and refactored all Objective-C classes
  • Fixed a bug that caused unallocated memory to be freed

Note: The version numbering scheme is changed to comply with the update framework.

OS Contiki v2.5 RC1 Binary released

January 8th, 2011 2 comments

Contiki is a small, open source, highly portable, multitasking computer operating system developed for use on a number of memory-constrained networked systems ranging from 8-bit computers to embedded systems on microcontrollers, including sensor network motes.

The name Contiki comes from Thor Heyerdahl’s famous Kon-Tiki raft.

The Contiki 2.x contains only very little assembler coding and even less target-specific assembler coding. This allowed for easy porting to targets beside the C64 namely the C128 and Apple II. Porting to other cc65 targets wasn’t done due to missing Ethernet hardware.

The major changes are:

  • Support of the Atari 8-bit machines with the ethernet cart described on http://www.atari8ethernet.com
  • FTP client app (only download although UI suggests upload too)
  • Twitter client with OAuth workaround (using SuperTweet.net)
  • New high contrast color scheme for Contiki UI apps on the C64.

Linus Åkesson: The Chipophone

January 2nd, 2011 No comments

The Chipophone is a homemade 8-bit synthesizer, especially suited for live chiptune playing. It has been built inside an old electronic organ.

All the original tone-generating parts have been disconnected, and the keys, pedals, knobs and switches rerouted to a microcontroller which transforms them into MIDI signals.

Those are then parsed by a second microcontroller, which acts as a synthesizer.

Here some video examples:
