VIC20 Game: The Last VIC

November 3rd, 2011 No comments

Orion70 has made a new game for the Commodore VIC-20.

Title: The Last VIC.

Short Description: VIC version of R. Adling’s Earth Defender game for C16. It makes use of hi-res 160×192 graphics handled via Mike’s Minigrafik extension (and bootloader creation utility).

Play the role of the last defender in your home planet, aiming at hostile alien bombs. With your Commodore VIC-20′s expansion port (!), you control an adjustable cannon. You must hit 19 bombs each level (12 in the colour version), but they keep coming faster and faster… Don’t let the aliens destroy your city, and beware of limited time!

Requirements: VIC-20 + 8K RAM

How to Repair my Osborne 1

October 30th, 2011 1 comment

I have recovered a Osborn 1 in pretty nice cosmetic conditions but broken ;-(

List of broken stuff:

  • Startup Garbage screen.
  • Long startup beep.
  • Reset works 1 times out of 20.
  • Modem port desoldered.
  • Powersupply ripple.
  • Some screws missing.

Solutions & Fixes:

  • Powersupply Ripples: Replaced some capacitors.
  • Modem Port de-soldered: Fixed the cold solder.
  • Startup garbage screen/long beep/reset: I have replaced a broken 4116 RAM.
  • Screws missing: Replaced with a new one.

I have to thank Terry ‘Tezza’ of Classic Computers Blog for the piggyback ram guide.

I used an oscilloscope to find the faulty ram cause all ram in my motherboard seemed to work well. In the photo #9 you can see the signal of the pin 2 (data in) of a faulty ram, while in the photo #8 the same signal of a working a ram.

Turbo Chameleon 64 beta firmware v6g released

October 19th, 2011 No comments

Turbo Chameleon 64 is an extremely user-friendly cartridge that can be used without opening the computer. It is just plugged to the expansion port of the C64.

The Turbo Chameleon 64 cartridge can also be operated as a stand-alone unit (since it’s basically an FPGA computer like the C-One or the Minimig in a C64 cartridge case), replacing the computer, the floppy drive and the heavy power supply.

When used as a stand-alone unit, a USB power adapter or active USB hub can be used as a power source.

Changelog:

Differences from Beta-6f to Beta-6g:

  • Implemented bit-fade in SID when no waveform is selected.
  • Implemented bit-fade in SID when reading write-only registers.
  • Added bits to detect in menu when disk-images need update after write actions by the emulated drives.
  • Implemented “door” on emulated drive, when open drive will read dummy bytes.
  • Fixed CPU instruction timing bugs discovered when comparing emulated 6510 against real 6510.
  • CPU irq/nmi timing fixes.
  • Implemented bit-fade on I/O port of emulated 6510.
  • Fixed SID stereo mapping for D500 and D700.
  • Four timers added at addresses D0AA to D0AD for menu (it can’t use CIA timers when freezing).

Unboxing Willem PRO 4 ISP Programmer

October 11th, 2011 11 comments
Willem PRO 4 ISP Programmer

Autopsy:

After ten years of use, i finally decided to replace my old Willem programmer with an updated version of this nice programmer. The Willem PRO 4 ISP.

Willem PRO 4 ISP is the most popular programmer on Europe. Programmer is built on two-sided laminate with metal-plated openings, solder mask complete with description of components.

Willem PRO 4 ISP could be connected into devices directly via ISP (In System Programming) connector. The main advantage of ISP is possibility to program devices directly in place without any need to dismount them. Because of that and high-tech software solutions our programmer is much more useful in various programming tasks. ISP could be powered directly by Willem Programmer or by device’s power supply.
